Hi! I’m Robert Lanting (1991), a music composer from the Netherlands. Friends and colleagues describe me as an easy-going guy with a dry sense of humor. They say that I communicate well, work fast, and deliver quality work. I know that’s just the positive stuff…

Here’s my story, if you’re interested.

I started playing music at age 15, on an old beat-up organ, and considered myself a musician from that point onwards. I quickly joined a couple of bands, and started playing more instruments, such as piano, guitar, and bass guitar. Early on in my ‘career’ I already loved writing music, but just saw it as a hobby.

During my college years studying law, I started to perform more. I played at weddings, parties, festivals and local bars with several groups. This was so much fun to me, that I decided to pursue music professionally. I applied and was accepted to the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, where I studied jazz for two years, with bass guitar as my main instrument.

Things didn’t turn out as I hoped though… I developed an overuse injury from playing with poor technique, and with an obsessively perfectionistic mindset. This ruined the fun of music for me, and for a couple of years I didn’t do anything with music professionally. Bummer.

After some soul searching, figuring out what to do next, I decided not to give up on my dream of turning music into a career. I remembered my initial love for writing music, and that I had always kept on recording musical ideas. These came so naturally for me, that I didn’t even think about doing anything serious with this skill. But that would change soon…

And so I started writing music again. My first official project came soon after, in 2018, when I talked with a filmmaker at a friends’ party. He needed a title track for his short movie, and asked me if I could do that. I said I had no idea if I could, but surely wanted to try. During the work on that project, I discovered my true passion in music: composing for media projects. So that injury forcing me to quit conservatory actually sent me in a direction I loved even more. Yay!

It has been almost a decade now since that first project. In that period I have had the opportunity to work on a lot of different projects with amazing people. I worked on short films with two nominations for best music, additional music for a Christmas feature film, documentaries, podcasts, and video games. In ‘22 I won the Evenant Composer Challenge with the track Total Eclipse.

Next to working on custom projects, I love writing production music in a broad range of styles for publishers such as Extreme Music, Dos Brains, 911 Music, and Cavendish. My tracks have been featured on several productions and campaigns.

In my composer-training I received mentoring from industry professionals and award winning composers such as Richard Pryn, Christopher Young, Lennie Moore, Jose Cancela, Nathaniel Blume, and Dirk Ehlert.

Next to my work as a composer I run a local music school with my girlfriend Silja, created an online course that teaches how to produce cinematic music, and am a mindfulness meditation teacher.
